Work Permit Extension

If you have a work permit that’s about to expire or that you need to change, you must apply to extend it or change the conditions on it.

You should apply to extend your work permit at least 30 days before your current permit expires.

You can be a Sponsor if ...

  • if you’re at least 18 years old
  • Citizen of Canada, or
  • Permanent resident of Canada
  • Registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act

if you meet this criterion, you may be eligible to sponsor your family members to Canada.

How can you be an eligible sponsor?

Who can you sponsor?

  • You can sponsor your spouse, partner, or dependent children to become permanent residents of Canada.
  • you can sponsor your parents and grandparents
  • You may be able to sponsor certain relatives like a brother, sister, aunt, or uncle in very specific situations.
  • You can sponsor an orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild only if they meet certain conditions.
    1. They’re related to you by blood or adoption
    2. both their mother and father passed away
    3. they’re under 18 years of age
    4. they’re single (not married or in a common-law or conjugal relationship)

 

  • You can’t sponsor your brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild if:
    1. one of their parents is still alive
    2. no one knows where their parents are
    3. their parents abandoned them
    4. someone else other than their parents are taking care of them while one or both their parents are alive
    5. their parent is in jail or otherwise detained

 

  • You can also sponsor one relative (related by birth or adoption), of any age, if you meet the requirements mentioned below:
    • You don’t have any other living relatives such as spouse, parents, grandparents, siblings, orphaned niece, or nephew; you could sponsor.
    • You don’t have any other relatives in Canada who are:
  • Canadian Citizens
  • Permanent Canadian Citizens
  • Registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act

Who can you not sponsor?

You cannot sponsor someone who is Inadmissible to come to Canada, which means they are not allowed to come to Canada.
